The SC4 Library Information Literacy Program

"Information literacy is the set of integrated abilities encompassing the reflective discovery of information, the understanding of how information is produced and valued, and the use of information in creating new knowledge and participating ethically in communities of learning."Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education 2015, American Library Association, American College & Research Libraries Association


In 2015, ACRL adopted the  Framework for Information Literacy in Higher Education focusing on six threshold concepts to serve as "passageways or portals to enlarged understanding or ways of thinking and practicing within that discipline." (If interested, see "Before the Framework" at the bottom of this page.)

The reference librarians at SC4 are working to incorporate the Framework into the Information Literacy program in 2016-17 with the following student learning outcome:


Assessment of the 2016-17 Library English 101 IL Program

Assessment evidence incorporates both an individual response system (clicker) pre- and post-information literacy class quiz and students’ score on the ENG 101 library worksheet. Questions on the pre- and post-IL quiz and the ENG 101 worksheet are directly related to performance indicators and outcomes for the ACRL Framework. All students who complete the ENG 101 IL program are also encouraged to submit an anonymous survey regarding the program. The reference librarians meet every semester to review and revise the program based on the assessment reports, student and faculty comments regarding the program, and information obtained through professional development events or readings.

The results demonstrate that after attending the IL class, students were better able to critically and effectively evaluate sources for relevance and usefulness and use them ethically.

Students also improved the following skills:

  • Identifying the elements of the citation;
  • Identifying characteristics of a scholarly journal versus a general magazine;
  • Using Boolean operators and other techniques to refine their searches; and
  • Recognizing the need to cite direct quotes and paraphrased material.

  • It is true that medical doctors are health professionals whose roles are of great importance in the society. They are usually concerned and people generally look up to them to take care of their health and other related issues. In fact, whether people live or die, depends to a great extent, on the doctors in charge of their health situations. Almost everyone wants a doctor who is knowledgeable in the medical field, especially someone with many years of experience at hand.

  • A clear advantage of having several part-time jobs is for people to be developed in the different areas where they are working. This may be a stepping stone for one to be able to discover themselves, in terms of their abilities and skills. Lastly, I think having several jobs will make one earn more money than a full-time job. This is because in a full-time job, one is only entitled for a specific number of hours at work and sometimes, employers don’t give overtime pays.

  • Education systems all over the world are based on the idea that students receive and remember information from teachers and books. These systems test the knowledge with standardized testing which compares students to one another. They only test the kind of information which is possible to measure in tests. The goal is to gain information, and not develop skills by which to use and make information. Unlike the old style of education, where people remembered things in order to pass tests and get higher scores than other students, the modern world calls for a new kind of education in which the focus is on deep understanding, creativity, and information management skills.
