This paper focuses on the views of corporal punishment as it relates to the discipline of children and why the topic is so controversial. The paper will state various definitions of corporal punishment as well as a brief history of punishing children with physical force. The paper will also state the alternatives and disadvantages as a discipline tool for children why corporal punishment may not be the best method of punishment for children. The paper highlights research and experiments performed with regard to punishing children as well as states statistics of physical abuse and lists some alternatives of corporal punishment that are just as effective.

There are both pro’s and con’s when considering corporal punishment as a disciplinary method for children. Much controversy has gone on with regard to this subject and studies indicate that the negatives outweigh the positives when considering corporal punishment for children. Evidence is prevalent of why corporal punishment should be banned but the reality of it is that it will be quite difficult to stop physical punishment. Many would think that defining corporal punishment when it relates to punishment of children is straightforward but fact of the matter is quite broad. A simple definition of corporal punishment is the form of discipline utilizing bodily punishment of any kind, such as spanking (Friedman & Schonberg, 1996). Corporal punishment can be defined in categories of whipping or flogging, burning of the skin, mutilation, or “a more serious encroachment on the body, a merciful instant death and a torturous and prolonged death (Schmalleger & Smykla, pg. 37). When referring to children, corporal punishment is defined as a form of physical violence by inflicting pain without causing injuries wherein it is legally and socially accepted used to control certain acts of behavior that are undesirable. Many people today are getting arrested for simply disciplining a child. But, in older times disciplining a child set good moral standards and taught that child on what that child was supposed to do and what not to do. There is a fine line between abuse and discipline. So what is child abuse? Child abuse consists of any act of commission or omission that endangers or impairs a child’s physical or emotional health and development. Child abuse includes any damage done to a child which cannot be reasonably explained and which is often represented by an injury or series of injuries appearing to be non-accidental in nature. This is a very effective way to discipline a child because this helps that child be a responsible family member and citizen of the society (Bugwadia).
Discipline also leads to more respect from the child. When children are disciplined at home, those children tend to be respectful towards others. Those children say respectful things like good morning, please, thank you, etc. Also, discipline instills appropriate behavior. When a parent disciplines their child for poor behavior, he or she learns about what behavior is acceptable. According to an article in the journal Pediatrics and Child Health, “Discipline can foster appropriate behavior in children, teaching them how to interact with others, when to postpone pleasure and how to tolerate discomfort” (Carpenter). With effective child discipline, that child will be respectful his or her whole life. For example, if a child borrows something from their parents, the parents car or jacket, and doesn’t return it either with a full tank or washed, than next time when they ask, the answer will be no. Next time around they are going to respect the parents and the parents’ things if that child wants access to the parents’ belongings, they are going to return it the way they found it (Radzka).
Discipline also builds a healthy relationship between the child and the parents. Children need to feel a sense of security at home. In a secure home environment, a child feels protected and is
